Amur State Medical Academy Hosts Scientific Meeting on Self-Infection Experiments in Infectology

May 6, 2026

The Amur State Medical Academy hosted the final meeting of the student scientific society "Dogma of the Infectologist" this academic year. It was devoted to the topic of self-infection of scientists with various infections.

"Self-infection is one of the most interesting topics in infectology. In order to create a vaccine and determine treatment methods, scientists conducted such experiments on themselves, voluntarily infecting themselves with various infections. The disease took place in their body, there was no need to monitor patients. The scientist fully understood the picture of the course of the disease and was himself a source of biological material for research," said Anastasia Zotova, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases.

The meeting was attended by students of all courses of the medical and pediatric faculties. There were also invited guests - Olga Kurganova, Chief Sanitary Doctor of the Amur Region, Head of the Regional Department of Rospotrebnadzor, Ekaterina Burdinskaya, Chief Physician of the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology, Tatyana Sukhina, epidemiologist of the Amur Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital, assistant of the Department of Infectious Diseases with Epidemiology and Dermatovenereology, and Elena Petrenko, epidemiologist of the City Clinical Hospital.

6 reports were presented at the meeting. In them, students of the academy spoke about the great scientists who went through the experience of self-infection, thanks to which new types of viruses were discovered, and also made a huge contribution to the development of vaccines and treatments.
